You can download these versions here.

March, 2002 New products, product name changes and general information.  We had set as a goal the end of January to begin rolling out a series of spreadsheet budgeting products using PerpetualBudget System as the underlying processing technology.  These products are underway but won't begin releasing until the end of the quarter.

At that time, the product name "PerpetualBudget" will associate with the spreadsheet budgeting products bundled with the existing PerpetualBudget System.  The general workbook collaboration products will be re-named "PerpetualWorkbook".  We have heard from many of our users that they use our technology for a lot more than budgeting so in response to them, we are re-naming the products more appropriately.

Thursday, February 28, 2002 The PerpetualBudget Staff is getting a short vacation with family starting March1 and returning March 5.  All emails and support questions will be answered then.  The v1.7x products continue to be released to the web site as we prepare for the initial release of PerpetualBudget v2.0 - Manufacturing scheduled for March 31.  This will be a full-featured distributed Excel budgeting product using the perpetual workbook distributed desktop philosophy. Full details will be posted to the web site soon.

  • Accept, Preview or Edit user budget changes before committing them to the master workbooks.
  • Point and click review of corrupted user files cell values side-by-side with master values.  Repaired files process automatically.  Non-reparable files are saved as <userfileold.xls> and a new template is created.
  • Copy - Values only.  Create User files (templates) as copies of master workbook worksheets either with Formulas, or Values Only.  This is useful for remote updaters who don't have access to the LAN.  Solves the #REF problem!
  • File management screen added to PerpetualBudgetXL.  Launch budget workbooks, templates and user files from a single screen.
  • Bug fixes.  During this period of code merge and quality improvements, we have supported several system evaluators who have uncovered a number of bugs and made suggestions for improving our system.  We have incorporated many of these suggestions and we thank the users for their support.

Monday, January 14, 2002 New builds of PB v1.61, PBXL v1.61 and PB SYS v1.61 are going up on the web site today.  Thanks to some input from beta sites, we have cleaned up the add/del record code in the Configure screen.  This screen is shared on all products and the behavior of adds and deletes is consistent.  Later in the week, we will be adding the RC location of corrupted User file cells to the Error screen processing.  This is in preparation to improve the handling of corrupted user files.

Monday, January 7, 2002 Happy New Year from the PB Product Team!  In preparation for the expansion of our product lines later this month, we are making a quality release of v1.61.  In order to build multiple versions of the Windows product and the Excel Add-in, we have re-merged all binary modules and re-designed our build system to support OEM code production.  The beneficiary of this consolidation is the Add-in product PerpetualBudgetXL which now shares most of the functions found in PerpetualBudget.  In the course of consolidating the base code, we fixed many bugs and re-worked some of the screens. Beta versions of v1.61 can be found here.

Saturday, December 8, 2001 All versions of PerpetualBudget v1.60 are released to the download page of the web site.  These products run on Windows 95/98/NT2000 and Excel '97 and higher.  See below for new features.

Sunday, November 18, 2001 An annoying bug in PerpetualBudget v1.51 was reported today.  If you right-mouse click on a worksheet in the BudgetExplorer, the program crashes!  There isn't any functionality in this event but a crash is a crash!  This has been fixed;  the link to download a new install is at

  • Drag and drop file operations on selected screens.
  • New QuickStart Wizard.  Drop your budget workbook(s) on the main screen and have the Wizard build your system automatically.

  • Find and Replace features for long list tables.
  • Improved LockedOut controls to point and click.

This release is becoming a cleanup prelude in preparation for the planned expansion of the product line to include a family of Excel budgeting applications specially designed around the PerpetualBudget concept.

Friday, September 28, 2001

  • The latest builds of PerpetualBudget 1.50.6x contain three new requested features:
    • Skip open User Files - during an Update Master Files operation, if various User Files are in use, the program detects this, logs to the Error table and skips the file.
    • Process protected worksheets - when you add a master budget workbook to a budget, protected worksheets prompt the Admin User to enter the protection password.  If the password is not supplied, this worksheet is not included in the update system.  This automates the processing of protected worksheets.
    • Process password protected Workbooks.  Identify the Open and Modify passwords when prompted.  Stored as encrypted strings, the program manages the application of passwords to fully automate existing workbooks.  Apply or remove workbook passwords with a mouse click!

  • PerpetualBudgetXL will be available for Office 97/Excel 8 users.  We're working to use the existing COM DLL for Excel 2000 in the Office 97 environment.  The installation package will detect an Office 97 install and use the new components.  This addition helps corporate customers who have a variety of Office 97 and higher versions running on their client machines.  This code is still in test and will release in v1.51 on September 21.2001.

    • UNC file support is now fully supported and tested.  This removes the dependencies from mapped drive strings in the database.

    • PB File Wizard now inspects your existing Excel workbooks and makes suggestions as to how to modify them for better adaption to the PerpetualBudget user file network creation and processing.
    • Encryption/decryption of sensitive information
    • PerpetualBudgetXL runs on Excel 8 and higher versions.

A bug has been reported on PB v1.40 and PBXL v1.40 for International language versions of Windows that prevents the file from running in some cases.  We found a hard-coded string associated with the test for existence of the file pbudget.dsn;  the error reports that the file can't be found.  This has been corrected and a new version will be available on the web site Monday, August 6, 2001 here.

Budget_Name characters bug found.  Non-alpha numeric characters used in the Budget Name are causing query errors in both PerpetualBudget v1.33 and PerpetualBudgetXL v1.30.  A fix is underway for v1.40.  Until then, don't use special characters like the apostrophe in the Budget Name;  use aA-zZ, 0-9 and whitespace.  The latest binaries are available for anonymous FTP download at (pbudget.exe, perpbxl.dll and the latest database module, pbmaster.mdb).

Friday, May 18, 2001

PerpetualBudget v1.33 has a new build on the web site.  We found a bug relating to updating multiple workbooks in a budget context.  If each master workbook has multiple User files to update, the error involved the update engine attempting to open an already open workbook.  This spawns a multitude of downstream errors which don't kill the application but acts pretty ugly!  A new version has been uploaded to the web site.

Thursday, May 17, 2001

We've just completed a major overhaul of the HELP system for PerpetualBudgetXL, including a tutorial on budget workbook construction and budgetsystem creation.  You can download the file here; it is compatible with Microsoft HTML Help.

  • PerpetualBudget v1.21.21 was uploaded to the web site today.  We are continuing development of the retrieve email functions in preparation for the 1.30 release.  If you have installed v1.21, download this file and copy it to your install directory.  It may be necessary to reload the COM DLL in Excel.  Go to "Tools" and select "COM Add-Ins..".  If this menuitem isn't present read our article on adding the COM Add-Ins... menuitem.  Click on "Add" and browse to the install directory and select perpbxl.dll.

Win95/98 install issues advise:
If your install is aborting after receiving these error messages " your system files are out of date..." and then a second error message "can't read a temporary file..." we may have a fix.  Our Microsoft installer doesn't always handle long filenames and we have introduced several new commercial components with long filenames into PerpetualBudget.  Click on the appropriate link ( PerpetualBudget v1.33 or PerpetualBudgetXL v1.21) download and install the file (small files).  The long filename components will be installed on your system.  Then re-install the PerpetualBudget product and it should install ok.  We will fix this problem on future releases.

Saturday, March 31, 2001

ADO errors advise:
If you are getting ADO errors with PB or PBXL, download this patch and install.  It is the latest database module ( password="dbms").  The problem being reported by users is they installed PBXL v1.21, and then installed PB v1.33.  The ADO errors occurred in PBXL.  We believe a downrev database module was distributed in the sample files for several days after PBXL v1.21.15 was released.

Build Alert! PerpetualBudgetXL v1.21.00

Tuesday, March 20, 2001
We are in test with Windows 2000 support, which installs with MDAC v2.5.  In late Q2, we   will merge all PerpetualBudget code to only support MDAC v2.5.  MDAC v2.5 is compatible with Win 95, 98, NT4, Me and 2000.  This will require users to have MDAC v2.5 on their system or to download it (one time) and install it before running PerpetualBudget v1.50 or higher.

NOTE:  Where did createuf.exe and updatemf.exe go?  If you remember these were the original PerpetualBudget Components freeware products for Excel 2000.  These functions were merged into a single Excel 2000 COM Add-In and is now called "PerpetualBudgetXL", which is now in beta test.  It is still freeware;  the initial install has a 30-day evaluation mode.  After 30-days, all functions that have been implemented continue to work as freeware;  the product can be purchased at any time to continue expanding the application of the product.
